Year 4 Investigate and use the properties of odd and even numbers (ACMNA071)

Activities - The format and instructions will differ slightly between the PDF and the Google Slide

★ Introducing Odd and Even: As a whole class, revisit what makes a number odd and even using the posters provided. Look at larger numbers in the 1000s and 10,000s so that students see that the rule does not change as sometimes they get anxious because there is now a big number involved.

★ Pair activity: Give students a worksheet between 2. One member of the pair will have a red pen, the other a blue/black. Complete worksheet.

★ Teach: Look at the rules when calculating odd and even numbers. Do the example operations together from the sheet provided but have students predict an odd or even number before calculating.

★ Pairs Activity: Have a game of Odds and Evens. Instructions included. After a few games, have students look for ways to win and test their ideas. Discuss with their partners.

★ Worksheet: Give students the worksheet to help them consolidate what they have learnt. Encourage them to use the rules to help answer the questions. Display the posters for them to refer to if you like. An answer sheet is provided.

★ Regroup: Discuss the game and have students share their winning tactics, e.g. I counted as I took my counters and made sure I always had an odd number. Discuss how some of the rules could help them with maths, e.g. it will help me with predicting because I know that adding together to odd numbers will always make an even number. I could use it as a strategy to test my answer, etc.
